First leg of subway extension to cost $279-million

Digging begins next month

A consortium lead by Aecon Inc. has won the $279-million contract for tunnelling the first phase of the Spadina subway extension.

The leg to be dug by Aecon will go from the current subway terminus at Downsview station, across Sheppard Avenue to Finch Avenue.

A 110,000-square foot station will be built at the north end of Downsview Park.

Aecon will work alongside McNally Construction and Kiewit Construction to dig the twin 2.6-kilometre tunnel beginning beginning next month. Work is expected to continue to 2014.

"Working together with our partners at McNally and Kiewit, this project will be planned and executed by a strong team including Aecon Buildings and Aecon Constructors personnel," Teri McKibbon, chief exectuive officer of Aecon's infrastructure group said.

The company expects the project to be the first of many such opportunities Canadawide.

Earlier this year, the company won a $19-million contract to widen Hwy. 407 from Markham Road to Hwy. 404.

Subsequent contracts will be issued for tunnelling the section from Finch through York University and north to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

The subway line is expected to open in 2015 and the TTC has yet to decide the station names.

One proposal calls for the renaming of Downsview to Sheppard West and then call a new station on Sheppard, Downsview Park.

TTC staff have recommended Vaughan Centre as a concise name for the final station, but York Region and Vaughan prefer Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

It seems like $100-million per km just to bore a tunnel from Sheppard/Allen to Keele/Finch.
